Most trips to the Brunswick County Government Center in Bolivia start with a task: renew a tag, pay a tax bill, pick up a marriage license. Park in the gravel lot behind Building N, walk in, walk out. That is the whole visit for most people, including some who have lived in the county for years and never noticed what sits just past the parking lot.
Behind that same building is a free public garden with more than a dozen distinct planted spaces, open every day from dawn to dusk, and this fall it is about to share its two busiest weeks with a library event and a countywide cleanup during the same short stretch of the calendar. If you already live here, that is worth knowing before the calendar fills in around you.
On Monday, September 21, the Brunswick County Library is holding a Community Open House for its Bookmobile at the Government Center in Bolivia. That same week, September 21 through 26, the county's Free Cleanup Week opens at the Brunswick County Landfill, open to anyone who can show proof of county property ownership or residency. Neither event has anything to do with the other. They are simply both happening in the same week.
Twelve days later, on Saturday, October 3, the Brunswick County Botanical Garden hosts its free Fall Open House from 9 a.m. to noon at 25 Referendum Road, Building N, the same address most people only associate with paperwork. NC State Extension Master Gardener volunteers staff the event, and this year's stations cover composting, fall planting, rain gardens, and wildfire risk reduction. Visitors can bring their own pruners for a sharpening demonstration and walk away with a free soil sample kit.
Three separate organizations are hosting events over twelve days; the library open house and garden open house are at the Government Center, while the cleanup is at the landfill.
The garden itself is easy to undersell if you have not walked it. According to NC Cooperative Extension's own description, the Brunswick County Botanical Garden holds sixteen separate garden areas maintained by Extension Master Gardener volunteers, each with its own informational signage and plant labels suited to USDA hardiness zone 8 and the coastal plain. For the Fall Open House specifically, organizers are describing seventeen distinct garden spaces open for exploring, likely reflecting a newer addition to the layout.
Walk in from the gravel lot and the first stop is the Welcome Garden, featuring Chaste Tree, American Beautyberry, and Limelight Hydrangeas among its shrubs and perennials. Follow the path toward the front of the building and you pass the Curb Appeal gardens before reaching the Container Garden at the entrance. Past that sits the Rose Garden, which holds more than 50 rose varieties in a range of shapes and sizes, planted specifically to show what roses can do in this coastal plain climate.
None of it requires an admission fee or a reservation. The garden is open to the public seven days a week from dawn to dusk, which means the October 3 open house is really just the one day a year when Master Gardeners are stationed throughout to answer questions, rather than the only day the space is worth a visit.

Five minutes from the Government Center, Midway Road runs its own version of a weekend rhythm, and it has nothing to do with county buildings. Greenlands Farm, a three-generation homestead at 668 Midway Road SE, keeps a Saturday farm stand from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. featuring fresh eggs and farm goods. The property raises a mix of poultry, including chickens, ducks, quail, peafowl, and turkeys, along with livestock like Nigerian dwarf goats, zebu cattle, kune kune pigs, and rex rabbits. Beyond the stand, the farm hosts educational group tours by appointment and doubles as a wedding and event venue.
That same stretch of Midway Road also holds two restaurants close enough to share a parking lot. D's Italian Restaurant sits at 2831 Midway Road SE, making its sauces, breads, and pizza dough by hand, while Midway Grille operates a few doors down at 2827 Midway Road SE. Between the farm stand at one end and two kitchens at the other, Midway Road covers a Saturday morning through dinner without anyone needing to leave the corridor.
It is worth remembering that Bolivia sits inland, roughly 20 miles from the coast. Unlike the nearby beach towns, its fall calendar does not wind down when tourist season ends or wind up around a boardwalk schedule. It runs on county building hours and farm stand hours, which happen to be some of the more dependable hours in the county.
None of this is a festival in the traditional sense. There is no banner across Main Street, because Bolivia does not have one. What it has instead is a government campus that quietly does double duty as the town's public gathering space, and a farm road that runs its own separate calendar five minutes away. For the two weeks between September 21 and October 3, both of those calendars happen to be full at once, which means a resident willing to drive the same few miles they already drive for errands can catch a library event, clear out a garage during cleanup week, walk a rose garden most people do not know exists, and still make it to a Saturday farm stand before it closes.
None of it requires a ticket. None of it requires a trip to Wilmington or the beach. It just requires knowing the schedule sits closer than most people assume.
